End of COVID-19 Public Health Emergency

  • The administration announced a plan to end the public health emergency on May 11, 2023.

  • What now?  The answer will depend on the administration, payer responses, and other factors.  It's likely that more information will be presented in the next couple of months.

Medicaid disenrollment resumes -April 2023.

  • During the public health emergency, disenrollment of individuals due to eligibility was discontinued.

  • The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 calls for the "continuous coverage requirement" to end.  States may resume eligibility redeterminations and disenrollment as early as April 2023.

  • Health and Human Services estimates that around 15 million people may be disenrolled from state Medicaid programs.
